Put your phone down for 24 hours

Updated: May 31, 2020

"It's easier said than done." I know that.

But have you ever tried doing it even?

I also know that there are people who have tried it. Some failed miserably and some succeeded. And those who succeeded, were content about doing this kind of challenge.

It'll be a lot more understandable if I say that those who failed, couldn't keep control on themselves because they were used to being connected to the world. And perhaps, they found themselves more alluring on the screen.

Manipulating dopamine system is the reason why scientists think humans are addicted to their phones.

Stating the facts, there are several cons of not using our phones, but the pros of keeping it down are more than the former.

Let's talk about the cons -

  1. This is actually the most common disadvantage which is familiar with majority of people, less productivity - if you are addicted to your phone, then you are more likely to pick it up every now and then while doing some work. This not only increases the amount of time needed in completing that chore but also decreases your concentration level.

  2. You get the wrong information oftentimes - In any kind of social media, "whatsapp" to be precise, it's easier to circulate and spread fake news as a pass time for many people which knowingly or unknowingly results in social and personal disasters. You've already got the idea.

  3. Negativity - These days, social media is being the court in itself. Many times people start judging others with their accounts. And many times, misusage of personal information takes place. Even a single bad news becomes more bad on these kinds of platforms.

  4. The "need to fit in" - Everyone has a unique label, and no one else can snatch it or define it other than the person who's wearing it. But people, oftentimes women, get influenced by another woman leading to body dysmorphia.

  5. It gives you ANXIETY - Comparing to the old times, when people didn't know what phones even were, cases of anxiety is even more today especially in teens. The excitement of getting a reply back, or posting a photograph is not great all the time. Depression is often the conclusion of anxiety which should be prevented at all costs.

How can we unplug?

  • Put your phone on airplane mode when interactions with other people on it is not necessary.

  • Turn off all the notifications from apps that you find distracting.

  • Switch it off instead if you don't need it while working.

  • Use it when needed.

  • Social media does not define you so don't get under its pressure.

  • Bring light to the advantages of not using it.

Advantage no. 1

You get a chance to connect with yourself and your family.

While sitting on a dining table no one would want you to connect with that piece of glass in your hands rather than people who are "physically" there.

Connecting with your own self is beneficial as you get to explore more about your mind and body. So, take time to do some self care. It'll make you more blissful and productive.

Advantage no. 2

Do journalling.

Not only does it organize your thoughts but also keep you moving throughout the day. Journalling can give you lots of profit if you do it on a regular basis.

It relives stress and also gets your tasks completed before your boss throws another set of harsh words at you.

P.S. - everyone's finding it beneficial.

Advantage no. 3

You get time for some exercise.

This is perhaps, one of the most important and beneficial of all.

Well you all know that it helps you in losing that extra weight, strengthing your bones, making your skin healthy, having a good brain health and memory and blah blah blah, but the most important thing it brings is that it makes you happy. It's difficult at first, but later, you will believe. It only needs 20 minutes from your 24 hours. Can you give it?

Advantage no. 4

Your house gets organized automatically.

Who wants to see their house being unorganised, shabby, and a difficult space to have a happy mind in?

The amount of time you use surfing the 'gram, you can use it in organizing your kitchen instead.

Decluttering can freshen up your mind, calm you down, reduce stress, save time and even make you have a sense of control. Which you seem to lose while having a phone in your hands.

Basically, if we dive in deep, we get hundreds of pros and cons of a particular thing. But it's upto us what we pick.

Choose wisely and don't just waste your time swiping that glass.

Just give it a try, and seal that phone of yours in a box. At least for 24 hours.

Advice? Use a good tape and make sure to stick it around more than 10 times.
